Great list, Jenny!
I’ve read many of those suggestions and they are excellent. I’m particularly curious about His Dark Materials ever since seeing movie trailers for The Golden Compass. Another novel I’d like to find is Stardust by Neil Gaiman, which also has a movie adaptation coming soon.
I always thought Harry Potter was similar to The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy. The series, which started in 1974, focuses on a young witch named Mildred Hubble, who is the worst student at Cackle’s Academy for Witches. There are several websites floating around out there that compare the two.

We have Stardust. I read it and it was a fairly decent read.
